Math behind it

Flop to river hit chance ≈ 1 − ((47−outs)/47 × (46−outs)/46). Turn to river hit chance ≈ outs / 46.

Pot odds threshold is the break-even equity you need for a call: call / (pot + call). If your chance to improve is comfortably above that threshold, calling is mathematically more defensible. If it is below, your chips may be heading out for a walk without you.
